Supporting the Electric Cranks to cycle Hadrian’s Wall at Herding Hill Farm

The Electric Cranks are a group of heart and lung transplant patients at Wythenshawe Hospital, who use electric bikes to aid their recovery and wellbeing. The majority of riders are themselves 'e-humans' with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) - mechanical heart pumps powered by large external batteries - fitted and connected via an abdominal driveline.

Employee app

Launch of new app to improve employee engagement WCF

It became very clear that we needed something quicker and inclusive for all of our employee owners. Managing Director Jo Ritzema laid down a challenge to our Head of People and Culture Karen Kelso, saying: “I think we need something that is a cross between Facebook, WhatsApp and LinkedIn.” Karen likes a challenge and after a conversation with fellow employee-owned business Cambridge Weight Plan found the Actimo app powered by Kahoot.

Entirely configurable to our own branding and specification, the app is intuitive and simple to use on a smartphone and required little or no training for our teams to get started. We have provided phones free of charge to people who did not have their own to ensure that everyone had the tools they needed to participate and be part of WCF’s online community.

Bringing in the next generation of young people in fuel oil distribution ASLF

Ken Cronin, chief executive at UKIFDA, acknowledges the challenges of attracting the next generation: “As a mature sector, fuel distribution can be overlooked by many young people, especially in a period of high employment.”

Danny: “I joined NWF Fuels just before Christmas 2019. Prior to this I had worked as a senior event manager comparing commercial events up and down the country for 3 years whilst also completing a Criminology degree from Leeds Beckett University.”

A Day in the Life – Jess Roberts, WCF Chandlers

I have a relatively structured day here at WCF Chandlers. I start my day at 8:30am where I first check my emails. I will then check for any scheduled calls with customers regarding credit, payments, etc and complete those. I then check for any orders that need to be cleared for delivery and perform any credit referencing and re-referencing throughout the day, while updating our systems to reflect all of this.

Acquisition of Drummohr

Drummohr was acquired by WCF back in 2021, after being run by the same family for more than 30 years. Since the acquisition, there have been lots of changes across the camping & glamping site including refurbishments, new accommodation, a new playground, a brand new website and much more. Jo Ritzema, Managing Director at WCF first visited Drummohr as a camper herself, saying it benefited from the draw of Edinburgh and the “beautiful coastline and countryside” of East Lothian.

Acquisition of Herding Hill Farm

Back in 2019, WCF acquired award winning camping site, Herding Hill Farm, located just 1 mile from the iconic Hadrian's Wall.

"WCF’s managing director said, we hope to capitalise on the growth in staycations and the desire for “experiences” over possessions which has fuelled the recent interest in camping and glamping from all sectors of the economy. As well as continuing the excellent reputation built up by the former owners Steve and Anne Dunwell, we intend to utilise the marketing skills at our Brampton Head Office to generate brand awareness – driven by both the site and its fantastic position on Hadrian’s Wall."
